Keeping children safe online is the biggest child protection challenge of this generationHead of the NSPCC, 2015
James first discovered his passion for online safety during his undergraduate degree, inspired by his collaborations with Professor Mike Boulton on a series of research projects investigating anti-bullying and online safety amongst young people. Graduating in 2011 with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Psychology with Criminology, James was awarded the British Psychological Society Undergraduate Award and has maintained his research interest, publishing a number of academic papers in his field.
Alongside his academic background, James has extensive operational experience. Spending almost a decade within the police service as a dedicated school liaison officer, James trained as an Ambassador for the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP). James has assisted with the delivery of a nationally accredited sex offender rehabilitation programme and provided mentoring support to former high risk sex offenders following their release from prison, for which he received a High Sheriffs Award. James has also worked as a Child Protection Officer and Online Safety Coordinator within a challenging secondary academy.
James continues to disseminate his knowledge and experience throughout the UK and abroad, through his work as trainer, consultant and visiting lecturer. James has advised on the development of local authority wide model online safety policies, served as a Safeguarding and Child Protection officer for an ‘outstanding’ primary school, and was recently commissioned by a local safeguarding children board to undertake a large scale scoping study exploring the online lives of over 2,500 young people.
James has delivered training to thousands of children, parents and professionals within a range of settings, including schools and academies, fostering and adoption agencies, local authorities and local safeguarding boards, the secure estates and charitable organisations. Previous clients include Barnado’s and Beat Bullying, the UK’s former leading bullying charity.
James is well respected for the evidenced-based approach he adopts to all of his work, and has a reputation for his engaging, inspiring and motivational training and delivery.
James is a very knowledgeable trainer and challenges participants to explore numerous issues around online safeguarding and consider how these issues impact on their own practice. His sessions are thought provoking, inspiring and also solution focused, allowing participants to take practical strategies back to their own organisation. I would not hesitate to recommend James as a trainer.Former Interagency Training Manager, Local Safeguarding Children Board
